The head of the opposition of the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, exhorted on Tuesday the chief judge Yahya Afridi to intervene in the current trials of May 9, alleging constitutional and procedural violations against the chiefs of Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI).
In a letter dated July 27, 2025, Ayub qualified the trials of “politically motivated” and accused the anti -terrorist courts of precipitation in the procedure at times, denying the rights of the fair trial and the legal adviser of choice.
He also said that hearings often continued in the morning at 3:00 am, undermining legal transparency and exhausting defendants and lawyers.
The opposition chief also alleged that the FIR had been manufactured, the interrogation was coercive and the leaders of the PTI were targeted selectively. He also criticized the denial of access to the media and the exclusion of family members of the courtroom.
Citing constitutional provisions and precedents of the Supreme Court, he urged the court to examine the conduct of the trial, restore free access and stop sessions beyond reasonable hours.
Ayub also asked for a judicial investigation into the public’s misconduct.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court postponed the surety hearing filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan until August 12.
