- Recent reports suggest OnePlus is shutting down operations
- These reports have now been countered by the CEO of OnePlus India
- Oppo took over the OnePlus brand in 2021
The tech world was rocked yesterday by a report from Android Headlines that OnePlus was being “dismantled” by parent company Oppo – but today we have an official message that rumors of OnePlus’ demise are far from the truth.
OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu said on social media (via Android Authority) that the company is “business as usual and will continue to do so.” He called the leaks surrounding OnePlus’ closure “false” and “unsubstantiated.”
And here at TechRadar, we’re very happy to hear it: we’ve been covering the OnePlus brand since its launch. its very first phone in 2014, and we recently gave the OnePlus 15, which launched last year and topped our ranking of the best Android phones, five stars out of five.
As you may recall, Oppo and OnePlus merged in 2021, with OnePlus becoming the sub-brand. Since then, we’ve seen a lot of similarities between Oppo and OnePlus phones (and Realme, which Oppo also owns) – but the OnePlus devices remain distinct.
Some questions remain

The original Android Headline report highlights several signs that OnePlus’ operations are winding down, including low levels of phone shipments around the world and reductions in marketing operations outside of China.
According to analysts, sales of OnePlus phones fell to around 13-14 million in 2024, compared to 17 million the previous year. Meanwhile, Oppo’s sales increased during the same period, which could prompt the company to end OnePlus operations.
There remains some uncertainty about OnePlus’ future outside of China and India. The brand has no partnerships with carriers in the US, for example, and previous leaks have suggested that the OnePlus Open 2 and OnePlus 15 may have both been cancelled.
Hopefully, OnePlus continues to operate on a global scale and provide some much-needed competition to the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Google – its latest flagship is high on our list of the best smartphones, and we’d certainly miss the brand if it disappeared.
