- OpenAI Frontier allows businesses to manage OpenAI, first-party and third-party agents
- Each AI agent gets its own identity, permissions and safeguards
- The company sees this as a collaborative approach
OpenAI has launched Frontier, a new AI agent management platform where enterprise customers can build, deploy and manage agentic AI from OpenAI and third-party companies.
In its announcement, the creator of ChatGPT suggested that Frontier is designed to combat agent proliferation where fragmented tools, siled data, and disconnected workflows reduce the effectiveness of AI agents.
“Frontier gives agents the same skills they need to succeed on the job: shared context, onboarding, hands-on learning with feedback, and clear permissions and boundaries,” the company said.

Speaking about siled data and fragmented tools, OpenAI said that AI is not to blame, but rather has amplified a problem that already existed before: “AI has made this fragmentation more visible and, in many cases, more acute.”
The company has taken a human approach to managing AI agents, considering what employees need to get started, then applying those same principles to AI agents.
Frontier is designed to enable agents to work in a variety of environments, including on-premises, cloud, and OpenAI-hosted, but more importantly, it uses open standards so businesses can use OpenAI agents, in-house agents, and third-party agents within this single platform.
The system works overall by assigning each AI agent its own unique identity, which includes permissions and guardrails, minimizing concerns about working in regulated environments.
In addition to early adopters like Intuit, HP, Oracle, and Uber who helped guide the OpenAI project, the company also plans to work with Frontier partners like Abridge, Clay, Ambience, Decagon, Harvey, and Sierra to “find out what customers need.”
