- Openai has just revealed the largest survey of chatgpt in history
- According to results, 70% of Chatgpt users use it outside work
- The survey was carried out by the OpenAi economic research team and Harvard David Deming’s economist
Open IA has just revealed the results of its greatest study of use of chatgpt to date, and information on how people interact with the Chatbot AI is fascinating.
Relving the study on his blog, Openai broke the results in three main dishes to remember: who uses the Chatppt, for which they use it and how the use of AI evolves over time.
The study was conducted by the OpenAI economic research team and Harvard David Deming’s economist for the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
While Future (the parent company of Techradar) has conducted its own research in the past which has given an excellent overview of the use of the wider population, obtaining information directly from the creators of the most popular AI tool in the world gives an excellent overview.
Here are three things we have learned from the biggest study in the world to Chatgpt and how people use it.
1. The use gaps end
According to Openai, the gap between the sexes of users who fully derives from Chatgpt has closed considerably over the years. Previous research in January 2024 showed users who had names that it was possible to classify as male or female, 37% had “generally female names”.
In July 2025, however, this figure was 52%. Now, I have doubts about how OpenAi can really determine the sex of an interacting user with Chatgpt, but given the massive influx with the same criteria, it is just to say that there is much less of a gender difference linked to AI than ever.
Elsewhere, Openai reports that the adoption rate in the least received countries is 4 times faster than that of the richest.
2. How people use Chatppt
According to Openai, the main reason why people use Chatppt is to get things done and “three -quarters of conversations focus on practical advice, information and writing.”
OPENAI breaks out how people use Chatppt into three categories: ask, do and express. The study says that almost half of all Chatgpt requests are “asking” – where a user interacts with AI to get advice. 40% of the use “fact” as “writing text, planning or programming” and 11% of the use “expresses”, focused on “personal reflection, exploration and game”.
Although this ventilation does not surprise you, I think it is interesting to see that writing is actually the most common work of work for which people use the Chatppt. Honestly, that does not fill me with much hope, especially since I spend hours and hours of my day writing without AI help.
3. Play especially, less work
This part of the study is the most intriguing, in my opinion. In fact, I am actually quite shocked by the results. OPENAI says that 70% of people use Chatgpt in an unrelated to work, the study indicating “Chatgpt helps improve judgment and productivity”.
Without this study, I would have honestly believed that most people use Chatgpt in an environment based on work, especially for banal tasks that do not require much brain power. Instead, it seems that users interact with chatgpt after the office closed and during their free time, stressing how much AI has managed to infiltrate our daily life.
