- There’s another leak for OpenAI’s next device
- This could apparently take the form of a smart pen
- Several gadgets could currently be in the works
We know that ChatGPT developer OpenAI is working on a real gadget – with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, no less – and the latest rumor is that the device is going to take the shape of a pen.
This comes from popular tipster Smart Pikachu (via Android Authority), who claims that a pen is one of three different ideas currently under consideration, as OpenAI makes arrangements with manufacturing partners.
Of course, in addition to being able to scribble notes, this pen should also be able to give you some sort of AI assistance: perhaps recording your handwriting and voice notes, for example (we’ve seen several smart pens in the past).
All indications are that whatever this gadget is, it will have some form of always-listen feature, with ChatGPT available to make sense of your memos and chats, and give you answers on demand whenever you need them.
A calmer atmosphere
As many have asked, small supply chain updates on the Openai/Jony ive hardware project have now been confirmed twice: – the internal codename is “Gumdrop” 🍬 – the project was originally awarded to Luxshare – now likely moved to Foxconn after a dispute over the location of the manufacturing site. Openai doesn’t… https://t.co/gkhogbIb4fDecember 30, 2025
We don’t get much more information about what’s coming from this particular leak, although the tipster does mention that the device’s internal codename is apparently Gumdrop – so make of that what you will.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly stated that the device should resemble a “lakeside cabin.” This certainly suggests something with a quieter vibe than a smartphone and something that works mostly in the background.
Previous leaks have confirmed Smart Pikachu’s claim that several different devices are in development, although it remains to be seen how many of them will actually launch. For example, a wearable pin and a smart speaker were mentioned.
Standalone AI devices like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 haven’t fared very well in the past, although we also know that Google and Amazon are in the process of offering improved AI assistants on their smart displays and smart speakers.
