- Opera Reworked Pro VPN now incorporates ExpressVPN’s Lightway technology
- The update also adds 15 additional servers locations for a total of 48 worldwide
- Opera VPN Pro still lacks iOS support at the time of writing
Opera VPN Pro has undergone a major overhaul – and it is now powered by one of the best VPN suppliers.
The team has joined the owner’s owner protocol of ExpressVPN in the service in a decision that promises to provide faster speeds, better intimacy and stronger security – even against post -quantity threats. The update also includes 15 additional servers locations, for a total of 48 worldwide.
New and existing users can now take advantage of the protection of the OPER VPN PRO revised on up to six Windows, MacOS or Android devices. However, the service still does not have an iOS support at the time of the editorial staff.
Why ExpressVPN’s Lightway?
Lightway is the owner technology of ExpressVPN, specially designed to offer users a faster, more secure and reliable VPN experience.
Completely developed internally and published in 2020, Lightway is open-source software. This means that anyone can audit their code to make sure everything works as it should.
ExpressVPN completely recoded Lightway from C to Rust last February for better security, performance and ease of extension.
Lightway also has the advantage of including default post-quantity protection to protect users from current and future cyber-menaces.
Now users of Opera VPN Pro can also benefit from these protections.

It should be noted that, unlike the free VPN version Opera, Opera VPN Pro was initially built on servers and the Nord VPN network infrastructure.
The supplier told Techradar that he had now decided to collaborate with ExpressVPN for this purpose.
Commenting on the move, the director of product marketing, confidentiality and security at the opera, Michael Tegos said: “Being an open-source and independently audited protocol which suffers regularly penetration tests to verify vulnerabilities, Lightway is aligned with our concentration on the continuation of the improvement of VPN Pro and offering a better confidentiality and security users. “
Tegos also mentions the improved speed and reliability of ExpressVPN as reasons behind the switch. He said: “[Lightway] Works particularly well on mobile devices where it offers reduced latency and better battery life. As we offer VPN Pro on the desktop and Android, it was an important factor for us.
“Finally, the use by Lightway of ML-KEM, the NIST standard for post-health encryption means that it can help us to help us VPN Pro for our users today.”
Above all, the supplier guarantees that the OPERA VPN PRO revalted continues to never record your activity, to collect personal data or any other identifiable information. A commitment that was verified with an independent non-lodge audit in September 2024.
