Opposite the budget as the debate continues

On Wednesday, the Sindh Assembly experienced lively discussions while the legislators on both sides of the aisle debated the provincial budget for the year 2025-26.

Official by vice-president Naveed Anthony, the session saw 29 AMPs expressing their opinions, bringing the total number of participants over three days to 84, and more what should speak on Thursday.

Provincial Minister Syed Zulfikar Shah opened the debate, describing the achievements of the Department of Culture and Tourism, including development projects on Gorakh Hill, training programs for emerging artists and the digitization of the Sindhi language. He also referred to the plans aimed at establishing a colony dedicated to writers and poets.

The PPP Mehmood Alam Jamoot PPP MPA praised the chief minister Murad Ali Shah for having a “pro-pepple” budget and called for the introduction of a boat ambulance service to help fishermen.

Meanwhile, the Qasim Siraj Soomro of PPP defended the budget, declaring that it reflected the government’s commitment to development, citing progress over 56 small dams in Thar plants, new schools and reverse osmosis (RO).

The opposition, however, launched a scathing criticism, accusing the government of ignoring Karachi and of not providing basic services. Farhan Ansari de MQM deplored the lack of electricity, water and road infrastructure in his constituency of Gulshan-E-Iqbal.
