- Former Assassin’s Creed boss clarifies sudden departure from Ubisoft
- He claims he was asked to “step aside” but has “no resentment” toward the company.
- It was previously reported that he left after turning down a position at the new Vantage Studios, a subsidiary of Ubisoft.
Marc-Alexis Côté, former head of Assassin’s Creed franchise, spoke about his sudden departure from Ubisoft after two decades with the company.
Côté clarified in a LinkedIn post that he had been asked to “step aside”, despite previous reports indicating he left following the creation of subsidiary Vantage Studios, for which he had apparently turned down a role.
“Many of you have expressed surprise that I would choose to leave Assassin’s Creed after so many years, especially given the passion I still have for it,” Côté wrote on LinkedIn. “The truth is simple: I didn’t make this choice.”
“Ubisoft has decided to transfer leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone closer to its new organizational structure,” he continued. “A different position was discussed, but it did not have the same scope, mandate or continuity with the work I had been entrusted with in recent years.”
Despite the sudden departure, Côté made it clear that he had “no hard feelings” toward Ubisoft. However, he stressed: “I also owe it to my teams, past and present, to make it clear: I did not resign. I remained in my position until Ubisoft asked me to step down.”
We do not yet know exactly what the future of Assassin’s Creed what the franchise would look like without Côté’s leadership. At TechRadar Gaming, we have awarded Shadows of Assassin’s Creed, the final main entry, four and a half stars out of five – praising its more feudal Japan setting and effective two-protagonist setup.
