The pairs free skating is the penultimate gold medal event in figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and after world champions and heavy favorites Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi faltered in last night’s short program, we’re potentially looking at another shocker.
But all is not lost. The Japanese duo are fifth in the standings with 73.11 heading into the final, 6.9 points behind leaders Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany. The Olympic debutants, who won silver at the world championships, set a personal best of 80.01, comfortably ahead of European champions Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, who are within striking distance of winning Georgia’s first-ever silverware title at the Winter Olympics.
Canadians Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud currently occupy the bronze position, 0.73 points ahead of Hungarians Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko.
The top 16 pairs will perform their free skate routines in reverse order, with Hase and Volodin last. Each routine must not exceed four minutes and must include a trio of pair lifts, including a twist lift, two separate throwing jumps, a solo jump, a jump combination or sequence, a pair spin combination, a death spiral and a choreographic sequence.
It is these technical elements that distinguish pairs skating from ice dancing. If you’ve caught the figure skating bug and want to dig deeper before the pairs figure skating final and the upcoming women’s singles, the three-part Netflix docuseries Glitter and gold: dancing on ice you covered.
