PAK vs WI 2024/25, PAK vs WI 1st Test Match Report, January 17 – 21, 2025

Lunch Pakistan 230 (Shakeel 84, Rizwan 71, Seales 3-27) against West Indies

West Indies took four wickets for 13 runs to trigger a Pakistan collapse after Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan made 141 runs for the fifth wicket to leave Pakistan two wickets short of the innings. Both men had started with the same authority with which they finished the fourth day, but once Kevin Sinclair caught Shakeel 16 short of a fifth Test hundred, Pakistan’s resistance melted away. Only a hard-hitting rearguard partnership between Sajid Khan and Khurram Shahzad prevented West Indies from getting into the innings even earlier, but Pakistan were still bowled out for 230 on the stroke of lunch.
West Indies started the day sticking to tight, disciplined lines, at one point conceding six runs in seven overs as Jayden Seales and Jomel Warrican locked horns. But neither batter produced any chances during this period, and when Pakistan negotiated the first hour unbeaten, West Indies were in danger of being thrown out of the game.

But the first ball after the aperitif brought joy to the West Indies. Sinclair lured Shakeel forward before grabbing him and gaining the advantage. As if that had been forgotten, the pitch suddenly began to remind everyone how unfriendly it could be to hitters against quality spin as the ball hissed and spat across the surface. Salman Agha was misled in Warrican’s escape to drag on before Pakistan imploded. A bizarre mix-up between Rizwan and Noman Ali saw the wicketkeeper turn his back on Noman to leave him struggling unsuccessfully to get back to the non-striker’s end, before a reverse sweep of the next delivery ended his own sleeves, a sharp West Indian critique. ending Rizwan’s innings for 71.

It was just an entertaining stand from Sajid and Khurram that saw a few more runs flowing in for Pakistan before the end of the innings. Sajid bowled Sinclair over the cow corner for six amid a short burst as Pakistan added 25 quick runs. But Warrican returned to close out the innings, making short work of both as they took 6 wickets for 43 in a two-half session.
