The Minister of State in the Interior Talal Chaudhry called the international community and the digital platform WhatsApp to take immediate measures against the WhatsApp canal of Tehreek-E-Taliban (TTP), which is used to carry out terrorist activities, distribute violent propaganda, glorify terrorism and facilitate terrorist communications.

In an article on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the Minister of State in the Interior and the Control of Narcotics did the alarm on the group’s digital footprint, Chaudhry said that the TTP – designed as a terrorist organization by the United Nations and the United States – is actively used Whatsapp to send bulk messages that propagate violent activities, the gap.

“The TTP uses its WhatsApp channels and sends bulk messages to proliferate its violent and hateful ideology, to spread its harmful stories and for the glorification of its terrorist activities,” said Chaudhry.

He also shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp group called “Umar Medi @ urdu”, which was created on June 18 of this year and had 369 subscribers.

The Minister of State reiterated the position of Pakistan’s “zero tolerance” against terrorism, emphasizing the country’s sacrifices in the pursuit of world peace.

Chaudhry urged the international community and WhatsApp to collaborate with Pakistan to counter extremist content by identifying and blocking these channels. “These accounts must be blocked and the necessary algorithms created to automatically detect and automatically use these handles and numbers,” he added.

TTP has long used Internet platforms and online media to spread its messages and get public support. In 2012, Facebook closed an account entitled “Umar Media TTP Page”, which the group had used for recruitment and propaganda, including the publication of a quarterly magazine and video publishing.

After the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and Taliban’s takeover, Facebook also banned WhatsApp accounts linked to the Taliban. A Facebook spokesperson told AFP at the time: “The Taliban were sanctioned as a terrorist organization under American law and we prohibited them from our services as part of our dangerous organizational policies.”
