Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has seriously expressed his concerns about Iranian missile attacks on an American military base in Qatar and asked that all efforts be made to defuse tensions and restore peace in the region.

During a telephone conversation with the ambassador of Qatar to Pakistan Ali Mubarak Ali Essa al-Khater, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his solidarity with the government and the people of Qatar during this difficult period.

The Qatari ambassador thanked the Prime Minister for having immediately contacted him after this most unhappy development.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz also organized a telephone conversation with the Saudi Arabia ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf Bin Saeed Al Malkiy and underlined the need to defuse tensions in the Middle East.

“Pakistan will continue to work closely with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to intensify peace efforts,” he added.

The Saudi ambassador thanked the Prime Minister for having contacted him immediately after this serious development which could jeopardize the peace and stability of the region.

He agreed that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan should continue to work together and coordinate closely to ensure an early peaceful settlement of the current conflict in the Middle East.

Earlier in the day, Iran launched an attack on missiles against the Udeid American air base in the Gulf State, the largest American military installation in the region.

The attack – described by the Iranian army as “devastating and powerful” – marked a major escalation in the enlarged conflict.

The strike followed the threats of Tehran to retaliate for the recent American air strikes that targeted its underground nuclear installations in Fordwow, Isfahan and Natanz using bunker bombs of 30,000 pounds. The United States had joined the current military campaign of Israel against Iran after which it called a violation of international nuclear guarantees.
