The United Nations:
Pakistan called on the United Nations Security Council, which met during the emergency session hours after Israel’s deadly air strikes against the targets in Iran, to stop “this assault immediately” and hold the responsible attacker.
“This council must refuse Israel the free hand and the impunity with which it continues to operate in defiance of international law and international opinion,” the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, a permanent representative of Pakistan, told the UN, against the Council of 15 members.
“Iran has the right to defend itself under article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations,” he said, adding that the actions of Israel in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen “reflect a continuous model of unilateral militarism”.
During the debate, the members of the Council have largely agreed – that de -escalation and diplomacy are imperative to avoid new tensions in a region which already groans the weight of the aggravating conflict.
The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, asked for the meeting of the Security Council, claiming that Israel “has now crossed all the red lines, and that the international community must not allow these crimes to remain unpunished.
Among those who support the request for the council meeting were Pakistan, China and Russia.
