Ambassador Asim said he was “really happy” that the ties started on the day of the independence of Pakistan. He said that the relationship would open “ways of cooperation in the field of human resources management, capacity building and climate change” and that the two missions would work closely on the “promotion of international peace and security” in the United Nations.

He added that Pakistan was the 100th country with which the federated microneia states had established diplomatic relations.

Ambassador Jeem S Lippwe said he had welcomed the start of a new chapter in bilateral relations and described him as a privilege to represent his country during the official opening of a “journey of friendship and partnership” with Pakistan.

He thanked Pakistan for his support in the opening of the United Nations offices for micronesia, said that he was looking forward to working in close collaboration with his Pakistani counterpart to strengthen the bond of friendship and congratulated for the day of independence in Pakistan.

Before the signing, the two ambassadors held a brief meeting to discuss questions of mutual interest, including possible areas of cooperation both bilaterally and in the United Nations.

The pact is modest in material but diplomaticly notable terms, it widens the network of formal Pakistan partners in the Pacific and creates a direct channel to discuss climate adaptation, exchange of human resources and cooperation in the United Nations processes where blocks with small states can be influential.

For micronesia, formal relations with Pakistan add another diplomatic partner that can amplify its priorities on the oceans and the climate in multilateral environments. The official upgrading of links offers Islamabad a direct diplomatic channel to an island state of the Pacific at a time when the world’s world attention has intensified.
