The permanent representative of Pakistan at the United Nations in Vienna, Ambassador Kamran Akhtar, was elected president of the 53rd session of the United Nations Industrial Development Council (Unido). This marks the first time that Pakistan has received this prestigious position.

The election reflects the confidence placed in Pakistan by the member states of the Unido, reaffirming the active diplomatic role of the country within international organizations based in Vienna.
Pakistan’s commitment to industrial development, in particular in developing countries, the least developed countries (PMA) and the developing states of small islands (SIDS), was at the heart of its profile in Unido.
Ambassador Akhtar expressed his gratitude to the member states of Unido for their confidence and stressed his commitment to further improve the role of the organization in the promotion of industrial development worldwide. He underlined the accent put by Pakistan on sustainable and inclusive growth, especially in vulnerable countries.

The director general of the Unido congratulated the Ambassador Akhtar, praising the continuous contribution of Pakistan to the main mission of the organization.
Pakistan has one of the largest portfolios with Unido, with more than 350 million euros invested in current and planned projects in various sectors, including textiles, leather, fisheries, food security, climate action and renewable energies.
Key initiatives such as Payar and Pafaid played a decisive role in reducing poverty, job creation and sustainable development of rural communities in Pakistan.
This year, Pakistan is expected to launch a new cycle of its national partnership program with Unido, alongside several new projects in various sectors aimed at promoting industrial development and economic growth.
