The regional reference laboratory for the eradication of polio at the National Institute of Health has confirmed a Thitta district polio case, Sindh, marking the fourth case of this type in the province and the sixth case in Pakistan for the year 2025, according to the Pakistan Polio Eradication website.

This is part of an increasing concern about the persistence of polio in certain regions of the country. Last year, 74 cases of polio were reported in Pakistan, the majority from Balutchistan (27 cases) and Sindh (23 cases). Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa reported 22 cases, while Punjab and Islamabad reported one case each.

Polio remains a paralyzing disease that causes paralysis and has no remedy. Vaccination, especially for children under the age of five, is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the virus.

The health authorities highlight the importance of finishing the full vaccination calendar to ensure high immunity in children, especially in regions such as the Sindh where cases have been more frequent.

The polio program has actively deployed vaccination campaigns across Pakistan, with the first national polio campaign of 2025 reaching more than 45 million children earlier this month.

In addition, a campaign targeted in the Quetta and Karachi division took place from February 20 to 28, 2025, where around 900,000 children received injectable and oral polio vaccines for an additional immunity increase.

These efforts are part of the major catch -up initiative, which is implemented by the extended vaccination program to immunize children against 12 preventable infant diseases.

In order to combat potential cross -border transmission, a targeted vaccination activity was carried out in 104 union councils near Afghanistan or those who welcome Afghan refugee populations. More than 600,000 children have been vaccinated in this high -risk region.

Polio’s program calls on parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated against polio, stressing that each vaccination opportunity counts in the fight to eradicate the virus and prevent other cases of paralysis.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its $ 500 million commitment to the World Polio Eradication (GPEI) initiative, aimed at eradicating wild polio and controlling polio epidemics derived from vaccines in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the World Health Organization (which) announced on Monday.
