Pakistan and Russia have agreed to activate a counterterrorism dialogue, strengthening security cooperation between the two nations, the Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The agreement was concluded at a meeting between the Minister of the Interior Mohin Naqvi and the Russian ambassador Albert P Khorev in Islamabad. The two officials also discussed bilateral relations and questions of mutual interest, the ministry said in a statement.

The two parties decided to improve collaboration in counter-terrorism and anti-narcotics efforts, while increasing delegation exchanges to strengthen links. The Russian envoy invited Pakistani officials to participate in anti-narcotic training programs in Moscow and Siberia.

Naqvi stressed that terrorism is a global challenge, requiring collective efforts to fight. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthen links with Russia, highlighting cooperation opportunities in various sectors.

Last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Islamabad on the sidelines of the 23rd Shanghai cooperation organization.

During this meeting, the two leaders had discussed political, economic and defense cooperation, Shehbaz reaffirming the interest of Pakistan to strengthen links with Russia. He also expressed his appreciation for the support of Moscow to the offer of membership at the BRICS in Pakistan.

The two prime ministers agreed to maintain close cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, in particular linguistic exchanges and increased collaboration in the banking sector to facilitate trade and investment.
