Pakistan signed a pact with the United Nations on Monday by agreeing to maintain marine biodiversity in areas beyond the national jurisdiction, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Pakistani Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar signed an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Marine Biological Diversity of Zones beyond the National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday.
“The signing of the BBNJ agreement reflects Pakistan’s continuous commitment to multilateral cooperation and the sustainable protection and use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction,” read the post of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier in the day, the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres congratulated Pakistan’s initiatives and leadership at the United Nations Security Council at a meeting with DAR.
DAR reaffirmed Pakistan’s unshakable commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in global challenges. He assured the UN Secretary General of the continuous Focus of Islamabad on improving UN capacity in conflict resolution, promoting sustainable development and the defense of fundamental human rights worldwide.
Guterres congratulated the “strong role” of Pakistan and the “positions of principle” of Pakistan to the Security Council and praised its leadership during high -level commitments.
DAR underlined the constant dedication of Pakistan to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the need to advance peace by dialogue and diplomacy.
He cited recent initiatives in Pakistan, including a high -level debate on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the concession of a session on non -OIC cooperation. The two events took place under the chairmanship of the Council Pakistan for July 2025.

During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister raised several questions of national and regional concern. This is in particular the current dispute on Jammu-et-Cachemire, the alleged violations of India in the Industry Water Treaty, and cases of terrorism within Pakistan would have sponsored foreigners.
He reiterated the position of Pakistan that the question of Jammu and Kashmir was to be resolved in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. He welcomed the secretary general’s recent efforts to defuse tensions between Pakistan and India.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed firm support from Pakistan for a sovereign Palestinian state, an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and complete opposition to the annexation plans of Israel in the West Bank.
The two parties have discussed the next high -level international conference on the peaceful regulation of the Palestine issue and the implementation of the two -state solution, which will be held in New York next week. The two agreed that the conference should lead to significant results.
DAR also praised the UN Secretary General’s UN80 initiative, marking the UN 80th anniversary, and said it had provided an essential opportunity to strengthen the three UN fundamental pillars: international peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.
He also informed Guterres of Pakistan stages to promote regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth through international partnerships.
