Pakistan successfully launches first hyperspectral satellite from China

It also improves early warning systems and post-disaster assessments of floods and landslides.

In a historic achievement that marks a new era in Pakistan’s space exploration, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) successfully launched the country’s first-ever hyperspectral satellite (HS-1) from China.

This breakthrough not only represents a major technological leap for Pakistan, but also demonstrates its growing capabilities to harness advanced space science for national development, sustainability and disaster resilience.

The HS-1 satellite is designed to capture ultra-precise hyperspectral images across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, providing unprecedented resolution for the analysis of land, vegetation, water and urban features. This cutting-edge technology will fundamentally transform Pakistan’s capacity for precision agriculture, rigorous environmental monitoring, urban planning and proactive disaster management.

Commemorating this milestone, SUPARCO Chairman Mr. Muhammad Yousaf Khan congratulated the nation and expressed deep gratitude for the support of the Government of Pakistan to successfully complete this crucial national project.

He highlighted that data from the hyperspectral satellite is poised to revolutionize agricultural productivity, enhance climate resilience and enable optimized management of the country’s vital natural resources.

With its advanced imaging capability, HS-1 will enable the country to accurately map crop vitality, soil moisture and water quality, while rigorously tracking deforestation, pollution and melting glaciers.

It will also strengthen early warning systems and post-disaster assessments for catastrophic events such as floods and landslides, particularly in northern regions. Additionally, it will support major development initiatives such as CPEC by pre-emptively identifying PK Press Club-hazards and guiding the development of sustainable infrastructure.

The successful launch of HS-1 highlights the long-standing collaboration between Pakistan and China in space science and technology.

The mission reflects the ever-growing strategic partnership and deep-rooted friendship between the two countries, which continue to cooperate to advance peaceful space exploration and harness its benefits for socio-economic development.

The successful integration of HS-1 into Pakistan’s expanding space fleet marks a decisive step towards consolidating excellence in space technology and reinforces SUPARCO’s vital role in driving national socio-economic growth through innovative space applications.

HS-1 Project Director, Mr. Mushtaque Hussain Soomro, praised the collective dedication and technical brilliance of the mission team.

He said the hyperspectral satellite marks a milestone in Pakistan’s ambitious space roadmap, positioning the country as an emerging leader in space technology for sustainable development.
