Islamabad:

While the world observes the international day in favor of victims of torture on Thursday, Pakistan reiterated its solidarity with the victims of torture in the world and reaffirmed its commitment to eradicate torture and maintain human dignity.

“Islam confirms the sacred character and dignity of each human being. Any act of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is incompatible with the values of justice, mercy and compassion that are at the heart of Islamic lessons,” said the spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Office in a message during the day.

He said that guided by these values and its international obligations, Pakistan has remained determined to eradicate torture and strengthen protections for all individuals.

“Legal reforms, institutional guarantees and surveillance mechanisms continue to be reinforced by Pakistan to ensure responsibility and respect the rule of law. Measures are also taken to provide the victims with medical, legal and psychosocial support,” he said.

The spokesman said Pakistan was seriously concerned about the general and systematic use of torture as an oppression instrument in foreign occupation situations.

He stressed that the inhabitants of the occupied Palestinian territory and the Iiojk continued to be subjected to the worst forms of torture and other treatments or cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment by the occupying powers to remove their right to self -determination.

“Pakistan reiterates its call to the international community to condemn the crimes of these occupation powers and to keep them responsible, in addition to helping to end the fate of the victims of their torture and their oppression,” he added.
