  • The ICTD conducts its survey via telephone interviews of 7,500 people.
  • The report reveals that 50 million Pakistanis gave 619 billion rupees in Zakat.
  • The amount exceeds Fed, Bisp disburation, 2022 Development aid.

Pakistanis are known for their hand -raising approach to charities, several organizations operating in the country while being funded only by public donations.

However, the real extent of the charitable organization was revealed via an investigation, according to which, up to 50 million Pakistanis gave 619 billion rupees – or 2.19 billion dollars – in 2024 in terms of Zakat.

Zakat is one of the five central pillars of Islam and refers to the amount that each Muslim is forced to give the needy each year, provided that it is eligible for this. Zakat is generally calculated at 2.5% of the total amount exceeding the NISAB threshold.

Interestingly, the study shows that the estimated amount Zakat has exceeded that distributed by the Benazir Revenue Support Program (BISP), which stood at 592 billion rupees as well as the government of 577.4 billion rupes of RS 577.4 billion accused rights (Fed) collected by the government.

In addition, the amount of the Zakat also exceeded the official development aid received by the country in 2022, amounting to Rs376bn.

In addition, the Pakistanis preferred massively to give their own zakat – instead of relying on the compulsory collection system administered by the State – with more than two -thirds which give it directly to individuals.

“About a tenth of Zakat donors give mosques and school, with a smaller proportion giving NGOs,” added the report.
