ISLAMABAD:
The Lawyers’ Action Committee demanded that the appointment of judges be halted until the conclusion of petitions filed in the Supreme Court against the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the lawyers’ leaders said that if the Supreme Court declares the 26th constitutional amendment invalid, the new judges will be removed from office. The 26th Amendment destroyed the justice system.
The lawyer leaders demanded that SC judges protect the Constitution and that a full court be formed to hear petitions against the 26th Amendment.
Lawyer Riasat Ali Azad said there was an impression that the body of lawyers was sounding the alarm at the behest of a political party. “We do not have a political agenda but we fight for constitutional supremacy,” said the lawyer leader.
Meanwhile, the IHC Bar Association also challenged the 26th Amendment in the Supreme Court. The bar asked the Supreme Court to strike down the constitutional amendment.
