The Tom Lantos Human Rights Committee of the American Congress will hold an audience to examine the continuous repression of political opposition in Pakistan, according to an announcement published on the official website of the Commission.

The hearing, planned in person and disseminated online on July 16 at 12:30 pm PST, will focus on the actions of the Pakistani government which restrict political freedoms, in particular the treatment of opposition political figures, the abolition of independent journalism and controls on the media and communication.

The Commission said it would assess the implications of these actions for democracy and human rights in Pakistan. He is responsible for promoting, defending and defending international human rights, as indicated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other Key Managers of Human Rights.

According to the announcement, many observers retrace the current phase of repression until 2022, when the then Minister of the bonus, Imran Khan, was removed from his functions, later found guilty of corruption and imprisoned.

The report on the countries of the American State Department in 2023 on human rights practices highlights several concerns of human rights in Pakistan, including forced disappearances, extrajudicial murders, the persecution of religious and ethnic minorities and transnational repression.

The Commission noted that the general elections of Pakistan in February 2024 were marked by “restrictions on the freedoms of expression, association and Pacific Assembly”, as well as incidents of electoral violence and interference with fundamental rights, as indicated in a declaration of the United States Department of State.

Witnesses who should testify include Ben Linden of Amnesty International, human rights lawyer Jared Gens, Sadiq Aministan Impact Network, and Zulfikar Bukhari, Advisor to Imran Khan.

The hearing is open to members of the congress, staff, the public and the media. It will be broadcast live on the commission website and on the digital chain of the room.
