The Pebble Time Round was a bit of a mixed bag when it launched almost a decade ago. Although we loved its slim design and ease of use when we reviewed it, it had too many problems – including below-average battery life and a high price – for us to recommend it without reservation.
The Time Round went the same way as Pebble did when the company folded, but now that Pebble has started releasing watches again, people are wondering if the Round might have another, uh, another round. And that idea just got a huge boost from Pebble itself with a new social media post.
An animated image uploaded to X by the official Pebble account shows a circular watch face with a spinning second hand. Below that is the title “Something is coming…” followed by the date December 9 at 7:00 a.m. PST. Presumably, this is the release time and date for whatever Pebble has planned next.
The circular design seems to be a big clue that the device is a new version of the Time Round smartwatch. Pebble currently sells two watches – the Pebble Time 2 and the Pebble 2 Duo – and both use rectangular dials. The Pebble Time Round was the company’s only older device to feature a circular watch face, making an updated version the number one contender for this mysterious new product.
Intriguing possibilities
Pebble watches have always been known for their long battery life, a trend the original Pebble Time Round broke with by reducing longevity from a typical seven-day lifespan to just two days. This was due to the brighter and more detailed display compared to Pebble’s other offerings, and we hope that in the decade since its launch, Pebble has been able to combine this bright and beautiful screen with more impressive battery life.
We would also like to see a more modern take on the design of the new version. One of the downsides of the original was the incredibly thick bezel that surrounded the entire screen. With advances in display technology, this should be a thing of the past.
The Pebble website hints that other new updates could be coming beyond the rumored new Pebble Time Round. On Pebble’s home page, you’ll find the same “Something’s Coming” checked image, plus a question mark above the text “Coming soon: more cool stuff??” We haven’t seen any indication of what this might be, whether it’s a new product, an update to an old device, or something else entirely.
