Pindi braces for monsoon floods

Rawalpindi:

With the start of the pre -Monsoon season, the Municipal Rawalpindi Corporation (RMC), the Rawalpindi District Council, the Canton Councils and the Evacuee Trust board of directors issued final red opinions – some for the second time – commanding the evacuation of 285 buildings on several stages.

The deputy commissioner of Rawalpindi, Hasan Waqar Cheema, imposed a ban on waste, building materials and other waste in the 22 km long and 15 rainwater drains.

House officers (SHOS) of the region’s police stations were responsible for registering business against offenders.

According to the District Administration Directives, residents of the low zones along Nullah Leh began to move valuables – Jewelry, refrigerators, sofas and other household items – in safer places.

Some families have already started a temporary resettlement.

To cope with potential floods, the Ministry of Civil Defense, the District Administration and the 111 Brigade decided to proceed with joint rehearsals to complete receptions next week.

These exercises will be carried out in low areas near the Rawal dam, including the colony of Nadeem and the Javed colony, and will involve civil defense, the police and rescue 1122.

The forecasts of the meteorological department for pre-mousson rains next week aroused concerns among residents living near the channels of rainwater.

Fifteen temporary civil defense goalkeepers were activated in these areas.

Each year, the heavy rains during the monsoon and pre-mousson seasons cause generalized destruction in Rawalpindi, affecting around 70% of the city’s population and commercial areas.

The municipal corporation and the Evacuee Trust Property Board ordered the evacuation and repair of all the dilapidated historical buildings – restoring British and Hindu – in the city center.

According to the director of the Municipal Corporation, strict opinions were issued to tenants and owners of these buildings due to the risk of collapse during precipitation.

The Evacuee Trust Properties Office also served evacuation opinions – effective until June 30 – to tenants from commercial and domestic properties to Rajaar, Sarafa Bazaar, Purana Qila, Bagh Sardaran, Dingi Khoi, Shah Chan Chiragh, Banni Mohalla, Janda Mohalla, Jamia Masjid Road, Trunka, Jamia Masjd Bazar.

These properties, formerly held by Hindus and Sikhs, are structurally unrelated and late for repairs. The District Council warned the owners of buildings that the unrelated structures will be demolished.

Three tenants challenged the opinions before the court. The court sent opinions to the district council and the director of the Municipal Corporation to submit answers.

The civilian civil defense officer Talib Hussain confirmed that the preparations are complete for the complete rehearsal in the Javed colony and the colony of Nadeem.

The flood season in Rawalpindi was officially declared from July 1 to September 15.
