- Genai tools like Chatgpt redefine the risks of Shadow IT in corporate environments, according to a report
- Employees have glued PII/PCI information in Genai tools, mainly from unmanaged personal accounts.
- Companies are faced with major dead angles in terms of data leakage and compliance due to the unwanted use of Genai, according to experts
Chatgpt and other generative artificial intelligence tools (GENAI) transform what the “Shadow IT risk” means, according to a new study, because employees are becoming a little too open – and many have even voluntarily provided the tool of identifiable personal information (PII) or number of the payment card industry (PCI).
The Shadow IT is the practice of using programs and applications in a professional environment that have not been approved or otherwise verified by the IT security service. Employees often use applications to which they are not allowed because it is simple and practical – things like image converters in web -based PDF, WhatsApp, personal cloud storage solutions like Dropbox, etc.
But Layerx’s research says that this exposes companies to all kinds of cyber-risk, from the introduction of malicious software and ransomware to the company’s infrastructure, to the leak of sensitive data via unprotected cloud storage or downloading classified documents to dubious services.
Stick secrets
The latest 2025 report on corporate AI and company data security reveals that almost half (45 %) of business employees now use generative AI in a form or another.
Among them, more than three -quarters (77 %) copied and glued data into the tool, and almost a quarter (22 %) did the same with PII/PCI.
“With 82 % of transfers from unmanaged personal accounts, companies have little or no visibility on shared data, thus creating a huge dead angle for data leaks and the risks of non-compliance,” said the report.
In addition, around two out of five files downloaded from generative AI sites also contain this type of information, while 39 % of these downloads came from non -professional accounts.
Chatgpt is by far the most popular Genai tool, with more than 90 % of the employees who use it. The vast majority (approximately 83 %) uses only one tool. Other notable mentions include Gemini (15 %), Claude (5 %) and Copilot (approximately 3 %).
