Friday, Azerbaijan and Armenia concluded a peace agreement marketed in the United States – facilitated by President Trump – marking a major diplomatic stage. The agreement aims to normalize relations, to increase economic integration, to maintain territorial integrity and includes American development rights on a strategic transit corridor through the Southern Caucasus.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have disagreed since the late 1980s, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous region of Azerbaijani, mainly populated by ethnic Armenians, separated from Azerbaijan with the support of Armenia. Azerbaijan resumed total control of the region in 2023, which prompted almost every 100,000 Armenians of the territory to flee from Armenia.

Under the Soviet Union, Nagorno-Karabakh has become an autonomous region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and it enjoyed de facto independence for decades after the Soviet collapse in 1991.
