On Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif underlined the importance of strengthening collaboration with the United Nations to tackle critical issues of sustainable development and climate change.
During a meeting with the coordinator of UN residents in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fight against climate change, highlighting the need for a continuous partnership with the international community and the UN.
The Prime Minister congratulated the precious work carried out by the United Nations team in Pakistan, in particular their efforts during the challenges of the country’s climate. Sharif also extended his warm greetings to the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, recalling his leadership and the vital support he obtained for Pakistan during the devastating floods of 2022.
A key point for discussion was the need to finance the climate, which Sharif stressed as a crucial element to approach the impacts of climate change. He urged developed countries to honor their financial commitments to the cause, stressing the importance of fulfilling these obligations to support efforts to attenuate and adapt climate to the global scale.
The continuous collaboration of Pakistan with the UN has also been underlined, in particular in the implementation of various climate change projects. In addition, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of filling the financing gap in achieving sustainable development objectives (SDGs). He also argued for the increased representation of developing countries in international financial institutions, calling for reforms in global financial architecture to better reflect the needs of emerging economies.
The meeting brought together several senior government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister of Planning Ahsan Iqbal, special assistant to Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, and coordinator From Prime Minister for Climate Change, Ms. Romina Khursheed Alam.
