PM Shehbaz says government ready to face any situation amid global tensions

According to him, economic stability and aid to the population remain the government’s main priorities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said the government was ready to deal with any situation arising from ongoing global tensions following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

The meeting was held in the wake of the recent crisis triggered by oil supply disruptions following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, to deal with the situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz announced a four-day work week and a work-from-home policy as part of sweeping austerity measures.

The Prime Minister today chaired a review meeting regarding the implementation of austerity and relief measures, as well as the conservation and management of oil reserves in light of the emerging regional situation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz told the participants that in view of the current global circumstances, consultations were underway regarding additional measures to provide relief to the people. He added that due to the timely decisions of the government, adequate quantity of petroleum products was currently available in the country.

He said that in view of the fluctuating global situation, timely decisions taken by the committee formed to maintain economic stability had ensured continued supply of petroleum products to the public.

The Prime Minister said that economic stability and assistance to the population remained the government’s main priorities. He added that all measures were being taken not only to provide immediate relief but also to ensure long-term economic stability.

The Prime Minister directed oil distribution companies to ensure sale of petroleum products at prices determined by the government and maintain transparency in the process.

He added that national austerity and savings measures had already been implemented and other initiatives were being considered. He added that guidelines have also been issued for third-party audit to ensure implementation of all these decisions.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the country’s existing oil reserves, importation of petroleum products to meet local demand and measures taken to provide relief to the people in the current circumstances.

The meeting members were informed that the government continuously monitors the sale of petroleum products at fixed prices.

The meeting participants also appreciated the Prime Minister’s decision last Friday not to increase oil prices further.
