Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif summoned a meeting of the Common Interest Council (CCI) on Monday to approach the controversy on the construction of new channels on the Industry River, said Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The meeting, initially scheduled for May 2, was called upon at the request of the Sindh government and should take place in Islamabad later in the day.

The chief ministers of the four provinces, as well as the Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar, the Minister of Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb and the Minister of Health Mustafa Kamal, should attend.

Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the suspension of new channel projects until a special committee was formed to examine concerns, reached a consensus. He pointed out that no unilateral decision would be made concerning the construction of the channel without agreement between the provinces.

The 1991 water distribution agreement governs the distribution of water from the Indus river among the provinces, the Industry System Authority (IRSA) responsible for its implementation and its settlement of disputes.

Meanwhile, sit-in demonstrations and dropping strikes continued in various cities of the Sindh against the proposed construction of six new channels.

Earlier, Sharjeel Inam Memon urged all political parties and the lawyer of lawyers to reopen the roads to ensure smooth transport of goods and prevent new economic losses.

He warned that the closure of the highways has an impact on the public, the livestock movement, import activities, farmers and poor.

“The closure of highways has seriously had an impact on the public, livestock, imports, exports, farmers and the poor,” said Memon, urging that measures are taken immediately to restore traffic.

Memon praised the “tireless efforts and the effective strategy” used by Bilawal, which, according to him, had successfully resolved the dispute from the canal. He stressed that the problem has now been completely discussed.

“This question will be permanently closed after the official meeting of the CCI,” he said.
