PM, the UN Chief discusses the next steps to build on May 10 cease-fire

In the aftermath of the recent conflict with India, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif continued to pursue diplomatic and had discussions with world leaders on factors endangering peace in the region, reiterating that Pakistan wanted peace in South Asia and, in this spirit, had accepted the understanding of the ceasefire with India.

According to a press release from the PM Office Media Wing, the Prime Minister organized telephone conversations with the president of the United Arab Emirates and the sovereign of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as with the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

During his telephone interaction with the UN Secretary General, the Prime Minister stressed that the just resolution of the Jammu-et-Cachemire dispute, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, was imperative to ensure lasting peace in South Asia.

He urged the secretary general to play his role in this regard.

It was the third telephone call between the two leaders in the past two weeks, added the PM office.

The Prime Minister expressed a profound appreciation of the managers of the secretary general and diplomatic efforts to defuse the tense situation in South Asia, which had been seriously in danger by the uninsured and unjustified aggression of India against Pakistan.

He noted that the continuous commitment of the secretary general and preventive diplomacy had demonstrated his lasting commitment to maintain the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, as well as to promote peace in the region.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan has accepted the understanding of the ceasefire in the greatest interest of regional peace.

He reaffirmed the company of Pakistan resolved to promote peace in South Asia while defending at all costs its sovereignty and its territorial integrity.

He denounced the aggression of India, carried out under the false pretext of terrorism, calling it as a dangerous precedent which justified the attention of the international community.

He also expressed his concerns about provocative and continuous inflammatory declarations of Indian management, describing them as a threat to the fragile peace of the region.

The UN Secretary General praised understanding of the ceasefire and prolonged condolences on the loss of civil life.

He reiterated his commitment to a continuous commitment to the two parties to advance peace and stability in the region, noting that working for international peace was an essential responsibility of his office and a global imperative.

The United Nations confirmed that the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had received a telephone call from the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, claiming that they had discussed the “following stages” to build the ceasefire on Saturday between India and Pakistan which had attenuated tensions between the two South Asian neighbors.

“The secretary general praised the ceasefire agreement of May 10 between India and Pakistan and congratulated the two parties for taking measures to reduce tensions,” his assistant spokesperson said Farhan Aziz Haq, in response to a regular briefing at the UN siege in New York on Wednesday.

In his telephone call with the President of Water, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintain the understanding of the cease-fire, as well as his unshakable determination to defend his sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also said that Pakistan would in no way allow the sacredness of the Indus Water Treaty to be disputed.
