PM to join Muslim leaders for joint conferences with Trump

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as leaders of six Islamic countries, will meet US President Donald Trump (tomorrow) on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (Unga), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.

Shehbaz will lead the Pakistan delegation during the UNGA annual session in New York from September 22 to 26.

President Trump invited the leaders of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (Water), Indonesia and Egypt for a joint meeting, we learned. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that leaders “would exchange opinions on issues relating to regional and international peace and security”.

Diplomatic sources told L’Express PK Press Club that a distinct bilateral meeting between Shehbaz and Trump was also being studied. If he materializes, it will be the first direct interaction between the two leaders since Trump returned to the White House earlier this year.

The Prime Minister will address the United Nations General Assembly on September 26. In his speech to the General Assembly, the Prime Minister will draw the attention of the international community to the serious crisis in Gaza and call for action to end the sufferings of the Palestinians.

“The Prime Minister urges the international community to resolve situations of prolonged occupation and denial of the right to self -determination in Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine.

“It will also highlight Pakistan’s point of view on the regional security situation, as well as other questions of international concern, including climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia and sustainable development,” the statement added.

On the sidelines of UNGA, Shehbaz will attend meetings of the United Nations Security Council (USC), the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and a special climate action. He should participate in a conference on the two -state solution at the Palestine issue on Monday (today).

He should underline the role of Pakistan as elected member of the Security Council and reaffirm Islamabad’s determination to work with all the Member States of the United Nations to maintain the United Nations Charter, prevent conflicts and promote peace and prosperity. He is likely to attend a CSNU briefing on Israeli assault in Palestine.

During the one -week visit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with a number of world leaders and senior UN officials to discuss questions of mutual interest. On Tuesday, he will also attend a reception organized by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in honor of visiting the heads of state.

According to the Prime Minister’s calendar, accessible to L’Express PK Press Club, Shehbaz will meet the crown prince of Qatar, Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid, King Jordan Abdullah II and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday. He should also meet the Austrian Chancellor Christian Store.

Later, he will participate in an international development meeting chaired by the Chinese Prime Minister and will attend a reception organized by the American president for world leaders. On Wednesday, Shehbaz is expected to meet the philanthrope Bill Gates.

Also Wednesday, the Prime Minister will attend a climate change session chaired by the UN Secretary General, then a debate on artificial intelligence which will be organized by the South Korean president. On Thursday, he will attend a ceremony, marking the 30th anniversary of the World Young program.

According to sources, during his stay, the Prime Minister can also meet the Prime Ministers of China, Italy and Canada, the president of Iran, the Emir of Qatar, the heads of the European Union and the World Bank, as well as the Director General of the IMF – although they were not yet planned.

The officials said that Shehbaz’s participation in the “largest annual gathering of world leaders” would reflect Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and provide a platform to highlight its long-standing contributions to peacekeeping, climate resilience and sustainable development.
