Police Storms Islamabad Press Club

Islamabad police stormed the National Press Club on Thursday, vandalizing his cafeteria and would have attacked journalists inside after having confused them with demonstrators.

According to reports, police staff have made the raid and the workers of the media submitted present inside the premises to violence.

Pakistan Secretary General Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Arshad Ansari firmly condemned the incident, calling for a “attack” against journalists.

He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate measures, adding that the attack was equivalent to opening “shots” in the federal capital. He demanded the affairs and arrests of the officers involved.

Ansari said the incident had created the impression that the press club had turned into a police complex rather than a space for journalists.

In addition, the Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP) denounced the RAID, expressing a deep concern concerning the use of force against journalists. In a statement, the rights organization required an immediate investigation and responsibility for those responsible.
