Poliovirus found in 36% of samples of 87 districts

Islamabad:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirmed on Tuesday the presence of poliovirus in 42 of the 117 evacuation samples taken from 87 districts nationwide in July, which raises concerns about the continuous circulation of the virus despite intensified eradication efforts.

According to the NIH’s regional reference regional laboratory, positive samples represented almost 36% of the total tested, compared to 32% in June. Out of 127 samples of tested wastewater, 75 negatives tested, 42 positive and 10 are still in analysis.

Sindh recorded the highest detections, with 19 of the 29 samples testing positive, followed by Punjab with 12 out of 27.
