In his strongest words, Pope Leo XIV denounced on Saturday April 11 “the illusion of omnipotence” which fuels the American-Israeli war in Iran.
The pope urged political leaders to stop fighting and start negotiating peace.
The American-born pope led the all-night vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica on the same day that direct talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives in Pakistan began.
Although the pope did not specifically mention President Donald, his message appeared to be a direct attack on U.S. officials who boasted of American military superiority and justified the war on religious grounds.
Leo asserted, “Enough of the idolatry of self and money! »
“Enough show of power! Enough war!” he added.
Praying for peace, he further declared the need to “break the demonic cycle of evil” and build a kingdom without swords, drones or “unjust profit.”
During the first weeks of the war, Pope demonstrated an initial hesitation to publicly condemn the war. However, in recent weeks, he has increased his criticism.
Condemning Trump’s threat to eradicate all of “Iranian civilization,” he said it was truly unacceptable.
On Saturday, he warned that “even the holy Name of God, the God of life, is fragmented in talk of death.”
The comment came after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited Christian faith to justify the war.
Earlier, he said God blesses no war and “certainly not those who drop bombs.”
