PPL strikes major oil, gas reserves in Attock

Karachi:

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) reported a significant discovery of oil and gas to its Dhok Sultan-03 well in District Attock, Punjab. This marks the second discovery of hydrocarbons in the Dhok Sultan block and is one of the deepest oil discoveries in naturally fractured carbonate formations in the Potwar region.

According to PPL, the well was drilled after large geological, geophysical and reservoir engineering studies. The company said that the optimization of well design has helped overcome drilling challenges, saving time and cost.

PPL, operator of the Dhok Sultan block with a work interest of 75%, has teamed up with Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL), which holds the remaining 25%. The drilling began on January 18, 2025 and reached a depth of 5,815 meters.

Test of the targeted hydrocarbon potential of Patala and Lockhart training. The results have shown encouraging flows of 1,469 barrels per day (BPD) oil and 2.56 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas pressure (WHFP) of 1,147 PSIG on a 32/64 “.

The discovery highlights the potential for unexploited hydrocarbons from the Mature-Kohat sub-basin, considered a difficult exploration area for a long time. PPL noted that advanced technologies, detailed geophysical analysis and internal technical capacities have allowed the breakthrough.

Company officials have said that new reserves could significantly contribute to the combination of national energy and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
