Pakistan is expected to receive general pre-mousson precipitation from June 20 to 23, offering relief from the serious heat wave gripping several regions, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced on Wednesday.

The wet fate should bring storms of dust, a rain wind and thunderstorms in large parts of the country, with isolated areas also likely to undergo strong precipitation and hailstorms.

The PMD said that unstable weather conditions are developing due to the wet currents of the Bengal Bay and the Oman Sea, as well as a West wave which should enter the country’s upper parts on June 20.

“Wind storms and lightning can damage vulnerable structures such as electric posts, trees, solar panels and parked vehicles,” warned the Met Office. He added that the current heat wave was likely to settle gradually during the forecast period.

From June 20 to 23, rain and Thundersts are planned in the superior and central Punjab, notably Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Faisalabad, Jhang, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Siackot and Sargodha.

The higher districts of Khyber -Pakhtunkhwa – notably Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Dir and Waziristan – will also experience rain and burst. Similar conditions are expected in the Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Cashmire, Murrier and Galliyat.

The Met Office predicted more dispersed rains from June 21 to 23 in certain parts of the southern and northeast Punjab Balutchistan, in particular Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and Zhob.

From June 22 to 24, pre-mousson activity is likely to reach Sindh’s higher districts such as Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu and Jacobabad.

The department warned against any urban floods in the low areas of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Islamabad during strong showers.

Farmers have been advised to plan agricultural activities accordingly. The public and tourists were invited to avoid unnecessary trips to vulnerable areas or subject to floods.

“It is advisable for all the authorities concerned to remain vigilant and to take precautionary measures to mitigate any unfortunate situation,” said the PMD.
