Islamabad:
On Thursday, International Labor Day was observed through Pakistan, in accordance with global commemorations to recognize workers’ contributions and raise awareness of their rights.
The day is dedicated to the recognition of hard work, dedication and sacrifices of labor, which plays a vital role in national development. It also serves to highlight the need for fair treatment, social protection and safe working conditions for all workers.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in their separate messages, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the protection, well-being and empowerment of workers, which calls them the backbone of the country’s economic development.
President Zardari highlighted the importance of skills development for workers and young people to meet the demands of an evolving labor market. He urged collaboration between governments, private companies, educational establishments and civil society to create a complete ecosystem for employment of work.
Calling workers The “driving force” of the economy, the president paid tribute to their role in maintaining manufacturing, agriculture, SMEs and the public sector. He called for significant political reforms, inclusive development and a culture that respects all forms of work.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, described workers as the “real driving force” behind the progress and resilience of Pakistan. He noted that work protections are anchored in the Constitution and aligned on international commitments within the framework of ILO conventions.
The Prime Minister detailed the reforms undertaken by the government, in particular the ratification of the main international conventions and the introduction of the national safety and occupational health profile. He also underlined the expansion of social protection institutions such as EOBI and WWF, as well as digitization and vocational training efforts across Navttc and Tevtas, with particular emphasis on young people and women.
The two leaders urged all stakeholders to work together to promote a safe environment, worthy and rich in opportunities for all workers.
