Friday, the president AIF Ali Zardari signed the bill on the restraint of children’s marriage, establishing the minimum age for marriage at 18 years old across Pakistan.
The new legislation criminalizes the celebration of marriages where the boy or the girl is a minor.
Under the law, no Nikah Khuwan (wedding officers) can lead a marriage involving minors, with violations liable to one year in prison and a fine of Rs 100,000.
In addition, a man over 18 who marries a minor girl can make up to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
The bill also authorizes the courts to intervene if they are informed of a minor marriage, in particular by protecting the identity of those who report such cases.
PPP Sherry Rehman Senator praised the bill as a historic victory in the fight against child marriage, describing it as a crucial step towards the protection of the rights of women and children.
“This law is the result of a long and difficult struggle, and it will help improve the education and health of young girls,” said Sherry Rehman.
She also recognized the role played by the president of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto, the party leaders, other political representatives and public support to ensure the adoption of the bill.
In addition, Malaika Reza, secretary general of the PPP Human Rights cell, expressed his appreciation for the management manifested by President Zardari.
