Price hike hits markets ahead of Eid

Freight costs for transporting containers from Karachi to Rawalpindi, Peshawar increase from Rs360,000 to Rs635,000

RAWALPINDI:

As the last ten days of Ramazan begin and only five days remain before Eidul Fitr, the district’s 60 price control magistrates seem completely powerless to control inflation.

Increases in the prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene have sharply increased the costs of transporting goods, triggering a second wave of inflation.

The freight cost for transporting cargo-laden containers from Karachi to Rawalpindi and Peshawar has increased from Rs 360,000 to Rs 635,000.

In the open market, chicken meat is sold at Rs 550 per kilogram, eggs at Rs 230 per dozen, mutton at Rs 2,500 per kilogram, beef at Rs 1,400 per kilogram, milk at Rs 220 per liter and yogurt at Rs 240 per kilogram.

White chickpeas cost Rs 425 per kilogram, lentils in grams cost Rs 380, red beans cost Rs 550 per kilogram and flour grams cost Rs 360 per kilogram. Cooking oil and ghee sell at Rs510 per kilogram.

Nan bread costs Rs 35, paratha Rs 60 and a cup of tea Rs 100.
