King Charles and the royal family were invited to use the former residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
A real estate expert criticized the monarch for leaving the vacant property because he said that she sends the wrong message for a period of economic struggle.
Talk to Channel of people, Robin Edwards said that the empty royal residence has become a symbol of the ongoing debate on monarchy spending.
“When many people in the country are struggling with the cost of living and housing in particular, leaving an empty royal residence does not do much to help the public image of the institution,” he said.
Edwards suggested that the property could at least be used for staff accommodation or as a royal guest house.
“At the very least, the property could be made functional, whether through the staff accommodation or short -term accommodation to visit royal guests,” said the expert.
“Leaving it vacant seems a massive missed opportunity and risks strengthening the idea that the royal family is disconnected from the reality in which most people live.”
The chalet was given to the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex as a wedding gift from the late Queen Elizabeth II.
However, in March 2023, King Charles asked the Sussexes, who left the royal family in 2020 and moved to the United States to leave the property.
