Priscilla Presley made a drastic stage in 1973 when she divorced Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll. Now it opens with what has led her to this decision.
“Elvis was the love of my life,” wrote Priscilla in his new memories, Very slowly, as I leave you: life after Elvis.
Elvis and Priscilla made the knot in 1967, at the age of 21. The couple had their first and only child, Lisa Marie Presley, in 1968. A couple got married only a year would still not be in their honeymoon phase, but according to Priscilla, she was neglected while the musician was touring.
“My life was her life,” she wrote. “He had to be happy. My problems were secondary.”
What has become the final straw for Priscilla is Elvis’ refusal to be intimate with her after the birth of their daughter, Lisa Marie.
“He told me that he couldn’t sleep with a woman who had a baby,” she shared in the memory, adding: “I was devastated.”
In addition to a lack of intimacy in their relationship, the singer was also “chronically unfaithful”. Add to that his mood oscillates when he did drugs, and his temperament, and Priscilla was convinced that she had to leave him.
“I had to discover the world,” she wrote.
However, despite the divorce, the duo remained amicable until the tragic death of Elvis at only 42 years old in 1977.
Priscilla says that she “cherished the great moments” that they had together and that he was his soul mate.
“There was, and will never be, one Elvis,” she said, adding: “I have never stopped loving him.”
