Bahawalpur:
An invited speaker at the University of Islamia in Bahawalpur (IUB) was arrested for attempted sexual harassment and corruption, following a complaint filed by a student of the IT department.
According to the FIR registered at the Baghdadul Jaded police station, the accused, Ahmed Mahmood, would have attracted the student to his home under the pretension of helping to improve his paper marks in English – from 40 to 85.
Once there, he would have asked for a bridge pot of 50,000 rupees and would have tried to harass her sexually.
The student raised an alarm, encouraging the teacher to flee through the back door of his residence.
The complaint was reported for the first time to the president of the IUB anti-harassment committee, which immediately returned the case to the vice-chancellor, Professor Kamran.
In response, the vice-chancellor ended the professor’s services and imposed a ban on entering the university campus.
“The university will extend full cooperation to the police in its investigation,” he said.
Police placed the accused in police custody and launched an official investigation after registering the case.
