Proton Mail could soon stop working in India following a decision of a court to make a blocking order against the service.
The High Court of Karnataka asked the Indian government to block the Proton mail on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. A company from New Delhi filed a complaint against the email service last November, accusing certain unknown users of Proton’s mail of sending abusive emails to its employees.
Order “to block Protonmail” Was issued under article 69 of the 2008 Information Technologies Act, the judge said at the Tuesday hearing on YouTube, adding that the incriminated URL “should be blocked immediately.”
The decision came because the messaging service could not reveal the details of who sent the allegedly offensive emails. These messages specifically targeted the employees of Moser Design Associates and included an abusive and derogatory language alongside images of forcaps generated by the AI, and explicit content – the New Indian Express reported.
This is not the first time that Indian authorities have threatened the Swiss supplier with a blocking order. In February 2024, something similar was suggested in response to hoax bomb threats that were sent by the Proton mail service.
“The question was raised for the attention of the Swiss federal authorities, who were in contact with the competent Indian authorities to prevent the blocking of proton mail in India,” said Proton at the time.
Is Proton mail available in India?
At the time of writing the time of writing, it is not yet difficult to know when the blocking order is applied and if the proton mail will stop working across the country.
