- Sony is currently working on the evolution of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology (PSSR) AI-UPSCALING
- The main architect of PlayStation, Mark Cerny, says that he aims to deliver “something very similar” to AMD FSR 4 for the PS5 PRO
- PS5 Pro titles in 2026 will see “the next evolution of the PSSR”
The main architect of the PlayStation console, Mark Cerny, said that PS5 Pro Games will soon present “something very similar” to Fidelityfx Super Resolution 4 of AMD (FSR 4).
Speaking at Digital Foundry, Cerny revealed that Sony is now focusing on its spectral spectral PlayStation (PSSR) and working with developers to integrate AI-UPSCALING technology into their titles, but for 2026, it aims to provide a high level of FSR level 4-level for the coming games.
“Our objective for 2025 is to work with the developers to integrate the PSSR into their titles; in parallel, however, we have already started to implement the new neural network on PS5 Pro,” said Cerny.
“Our target is to have something very similar to that of FSR 4 available on PS5 Pro for the titles of 2026 as the next evolution of the PSSR; it should take the same entries and mainly produce the same outputs. Make this implementation is rather ambitious and consumed, which is why you have not already seen this new UPSCALEUR on PS5 PRO.”
This occurs after AMD launched its new RDNA 4 GPU architecture for its RX 9000 series, in collaboration with PlayStation on Project Amethyst; A multi -year partnership announced in December, which aims to create “a more ideal architecture for automatic learning”.
“The neural network (and the training recipe) in the FSR 4 speaker are the first results of the AMETHYST collaboration,” added Cerny. “And the results are excellent, it is a more advanced approach that can exceed the crisp of the PSSR. I am very proud of the work of the joint team!”
Despite the intensive calculation power of FSR4, Cerny also believes that the PS5 PRO has the potential to execute an FSR 4 type technology, saying: “This is what we target, and we think we can achieve it”.
“The advanced performance number for PS5 PRO is 300 8-bit TOPS without rarity, which compares very well to recently published AMD GPUs. We do not think that rarity is useful for this special scale algorithm,” he said.
