Islamabad:

On Monday, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) began the license for virtual private network services (VPN) as part of the class license framework to regulate data services in the country.

According to a spokesperson for the PTA, the authority has approved the requests of two companies for the issuance of class licenses for VPN services.

The initiative aims to facilitate companies by legally using VPNs while guaranteeing data security, confidentiality and compliance with regulations. “PTA is committed to supporting organizations in responsible connectivity solutions,” said the spokesperson.

Companies and individuals interested in obtaining a class license for VPN services can apply via the official PTA electronic services portal.

It should be noted that on December 7, 2024, PTA introduced a VPN recording installation via mobile numbers, allowing freelancers who have no static intellectual property to record and use VPN services.

“Warlongers can now record their mobile numbers for the use of VPNs, which allows them to work transparently on mobile data,” said the spokesperson for the PTA.

The initiative is part of the broader PTA effort to promote the IT sector and simplify the VPN recording process.

The authority has so far registered more than 31,000 VPNs, is of previous challenges of the freelancers faced with static registration based on intellectual property.

A class license allows several users to operate in the context of a unified set of regulations without requiring individual approvals. In December 2024, the PTA resumed class licenses for data services, in particular for VPN suppliers.

Companies offering a VPN and related services must obtain this license to operate legally in Pakistan.
