On Wednesday, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that it had blocked 16 Indian YouTube news channels, 31 video links and 32 websites for having allegedly disseminated false information and anti-Pakistani propaganda.
In a press release, the regulatory organization said that the content prohibited “disseminated deception and harmful stories aimed at manipulating the perception of the public and undergoing national unity”.
This decision comes in the midst of increased regional tensions, the PTA highlighting its commitment to protect the digital space of Pakistan. “This measure was taken in the light of the regional situation in force to protect national security,” the statement said.
The authority warned that it would continue to closely monitor the online platforms and take firm measures against any material that threatens the national interests of Pakistan.
“We remain vigilant against disinformation campaigns and will apply compliance to ensure responsible use of digital platforms,” added the PTA.
Although the names of the blocked channels and websites were not disclosed, the PTA confirmed that all were involved in promoting anti-Pakistani content. Citizens have been encouraged to report any suspicious material in broader efforts to combat online disinformation.
