Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Junaid Akbar resigned as president of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), only four months after having assumed the role.
In a statement, Akbar confirmed that he had resigned to the president of the PTI, lawyer Gohar Ali Khan. He said he had fully accepted the party’s decision, expressing his unwavering loyalty to the founder of PTI, Imran Khan.
“Whatever the decision taken by the party or Imran Khan, I will not even hesitate a minute and I will accept it with all my heart,” he said. “The titles do not matter for me. If Khan even asks me to resign as president of the party or to resign from the parliament, I would without doubt it,” he added.
Akbar said that although he has not yet received a direct message from Imran Khan through official channels, he had already submitted his resignation.
For the future, he said that he had summoned a meeting of all PTI officials across the country on May 15. “The questions concerning our movement will be finalized that day,” he said.
Akbar was elected without opposition as president of the CAP in January. In the same month, he was appointed by the founder of the PTI as president of the Khyber-Pakhtunkha section of the party, replacing chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
Although the Presidency of the CAP is traditionally held by the head of the opposition or their candidate, there is no legal requirement imposing this agreement.
The position had remained vacant since the general elections of February 2024. Initially, Sher Afzal Marwat was nominated, followed by Sheikh Waqas Akram and Omar Ayub Khan. Akbar’s name was finally finalized for the role.
