PTI leader is back in prison despite medical problems: lawyer

Lahore:

Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s lawyer, Pakistan Tehreek-E-insaf (PTI) chief, Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s lawyer allegedly alleged that she had returned to Kot Lakhpat prison on Saturday after a premature release from the Services Hospital despite medical problems.

Dr. Rashid, 74, gynecologist and cancer survivor, has been in detention since May 12, 2023, faced with several charges linked to riots launched by the arrest of the founder of the PTI Imran Khan. Her health failed several times, with hospitalizations in May and July from last year, and again last week when she suffered from serious abdominal pain and breathing difficulties.

Her lawyer Rana Mudassar said she was fighting stomach infection and needed oxygen support for respiratory distress. Although she suffered medical tests during her recent stay in hospital, Mudassar said that the authorities had unloaded it without finishing the necessary treatment, alleging a violation of her right to health care. His family and legal team were not informed of his transfer to prison, said the lawyer.

The deputy chief of the Punjab assembly, Moeen Riaz Qureshi, criticized the government’s treatment of the issue. He underlined the vulnerability of the former provincial minister as a survivor of elderly cancer and accused the authorities of neglecting his medical needs for political reasons.
