Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI) submitted a resolution to the National Assembly on Thursday, opposing the construction of new industrial channels under the initiative of Green Pakistan, invoking serious concerns of the Sindh.

The resolution was submitted by the leader of the opposition Omar Ayub Khan and signed by the party leaders Zartaj Gul, Ali Muhammad Khan and Mujahid Khan.

The resolution required immediate suspension of the Cholistan canals project until the concerns raised by the SINDH be discussed through constitutional mechanisms.

The party called for an emergency meeting of the Common Interest Board (CCI) within 15 days to ensure an inclusive consultation between the provinces.

PTI also demanded a neutral audit of the water availability certification of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA), to be finished within 60 days.

PTI insists that the distribution of water described in the 1991 water agreement must be applied before launching a new channel project, in particular by guaranteeing the share of the Sindh of 48.76 million acres and preserving the ecological balance of the indta delta.

The resolution also urged public hearings and transparent decision -making with the active contribution of representatives of the Sindh, civil society and the affected communities.

The Canal project, inaugurated in February, sparked tensions between Sindh and Punjab. The Sindh Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution against the initiative in March.
